Clutter, Cooking & Carnival – Week 3, 2021 – Project 365

A couple of weeks ago, I had said, we would be continuing with online classes for Daughter 5. Well, her school informed us we had to compulsorily send her for physical classes. So today was her first day back in school, after a gap of 10 months! She was way too excited! I was more worried about her younger sister – she doesn’t really remember the time her sister used to go to school. As expected, the younger one was quite upset – she wanted a dress, shoes, bag and school bus like her elder sis! 🙁

May God protect our children from all sort of harm, evil and illness.

Blurry Pictures. Noise. Excitement. Elder daughter was doing a robot dance while the younger one laughed her heart out watching the performance. I just observed them having the most fun with the simplest of ‘toys’! Simple memories I want to be etched forever!

Most bloggers/vloggers will have a few recipes and food related posts on their online space. Well, I have none! This would be my first food related picture. Simply for one reason. I absolutely hate cooking. *something blasphemous to say for a Malabar Girl* 😁 but that is the absolute truth.

I often say, I cook only because I have three mouths to feed, two with growing up needs and another, after a long demanding hard day at work! Or else, I would have survived on Maggi Noodles and Bread & Jam!

There are three main reasons why I hate to cook : 1) It takes a lot of time, especially desi cuisine. Time that I could spent with my children or in creative pursuits! 2) Deciding what to cook. Decision- fatigue! Deciding day in and day out what to cook for three meals a day! 3) Monotonous. Same routine or cuisine.

Of late, I am trying to change my “feeling” towards cooking – *trying* to meal prep, creating a weekly meal plan on my Bullet Journal and cooking new dishes and recipes! (Tasbih and Adhkar too while cooking, it comes *subconsciously* because that is what I have seen my mom do and I think my brain has stored it that way. Haha. Alhamdulilah )

Also, I absolutely hate that notion in our culture -If you are a great cook, you are an amazing daughter/ inlaw/wife/mother etc.

So after saying all this, I don’t mean to say that I don’t cook for my family or that I am a lousy cook, just that I don’t enjoy it as much as I enjoy being with my kids or reading or writing. Frankly, I don’t want my kids to remember me as ‘always in the kitchen!’ (Also it helps I have a better half who has the same views as me regarding spending time in the kitchen😀 *Hi takeaway*)

The above spice mix was clicked today – while cooking Mutton Bukhari Rice, recipe from @shabosphere.( I love her recipes, they are tasty, easy and savior for people like me 😄)

*Looking forward to the day I can outsource daily cooking*😃 (barring baking & biriyani!)

An update on my Bullet Journaling Life – going strong in Week Three too 😀 I am kind of surprised at myself !

Friday, January 22. 2021

Well, you will be wondering why I am putting up artwork of my child? I was not planning to make her draw the picture which was given as part of her Thursday assignment. I thought it would be too difficult for her and why to tax her ?! She looked at the picture and drew the above herself. I should not UNDERESTIMATE her – I am reminding myself!

“Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you, yet they belong not to you.
You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,
Which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.”

Al Khor carnival

Today we went for the Al Khor Carnival and it was amazing, though heavily crowded! It was supposed to start on the 21st but got delayed due to the adverse weather conditions. There are children’s play area – paid and free, inflatable play area, a bazaar or market place, a nicely decorated and well set-up food court area. With the cool weather now, it is a perfect spot for families. (Timings 12 PM – 6 PM, until 6th February)

  1. Oh wow, that is a long time to have been out of school, I hope she enjoyed being back – I bet she was rather tired too. i’m not a cooking fan either, probably not helped by the fact my son is really fussy, and hates most of the things I actually enjoy cooking – hopefully one day he’ll like sauces and a bit of spice! #365

  2. Aww I can imagine how excited she must have been. Bee is waiting for the day she can go back to school.

I am like you, absolutely hate cooking and yes it does seem like how well you cook is seen as a good indicator of whether you are a good wife/mother etc in our culture.

The carnival sounds like it is good fun.

  3. Hope starting back at school went ok for your eldest. I’m with you on the cooking and having to decide. That’s the worst part, I don’t mind the actual cooking part, especially now I’m getting N starting cooking.

  4. Aww! How exciting for your daughter to be back to school. It’s so sad her sister missed her so much.
There is nothing more fun for a child than a cardboard box. What a fab robot.
I go through phases, sometimes I love to cook and other times I can’t be bothered. I would prefer to spend time with my girls than be in the kitchen. x

  5. I hope going back to school is a positive experience for your daughter. No idea when ours will go back at the moment. I’m not a lover of cooking, it can be such a chore at times. I love the drawing. I bet going to the carnival was fun #365

  6. I can imagine how your daughter must have been excited to go to school. My younger son misses school, especially that many in his class are attending, being children of the key workers. I do love cooking, but agree those expectations of providing several meals a day every day could be exhausting and honestly boring. I love trying new recipes, but my kid is happy to eat pasta with cheese every day, given a chance, and doesn’t want to try new things.
    The drawing is absolutely lovely!
I don’t quite agree about the social media driven decor and our expectations of real life. I buy antique/interior magazines, and love Pinterest, but never felt compelled to follow their advice. We all have different lifestyles, personalities, which is reflected in our homes. I might comment on a celebrity/influencer’s interior, that’s nice. But I love my home better, it has things that mean something to me. 🙂

  7. I hope your little one enjoys being back at school. I am sure her sister will get used to not having her around as much. I am going through a phase of not enjoying cooking, we are stuck in a rut food wise but hopefully it will improve once the weather does

  8. I hope your daughter is settling in well back at school. It must feel like quite a change for her younger sister. I love how much fun the robot helmet gave them both and your daughter’s drawing is lovely. I quite like cooking but I do find trying to decide what to have quite tedious at times. #project365

  9. How exciting your eldest daughter going back to school, hope she enjoyed it. Bless the little one wanting to go off with her. I am not a fan of cooking either, much prefer takeaways. My husband usually cooks, I think I should try I make a nice risotto but that’s about it.

  10. I enjoy cooking but find it demoralising when the kids don’t eat it I am vegan and gluten free so often have to make 5 different meals to suit everyone’s tastes! #project365

  11. You’re out in the Middle East? I saw the first photo of the children stood on the ground and thought, ‘that’s not the UK’ I find food from India and Pakistan to be too complicated, too many dishes. I’ve asked my friends in the past if so many dishes are served because they have guests and they say no, they cook like this every meal. I hope your daughter is enjoying being back in school.

Howdy ! Drop a line if you enjoyed the article (Or did not!)
