Author: Aidh Al Qarni
INTRODUCTION:
Welcome to the fourth instalment in our series on A-Z inspirational reads for Muslim women! In this post, we’ll be introducing the book ‘Don’t Be Sad by Aidh Al Qarni’ which is a self-help book that offers practical advice and guidance to those struggling with feelings of sadness, anxiety, and depression. It is a book that has touched the hearts of many readers, and I am excited to share my review of it.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Dr Aidh Al Qarni is a Saudi Islamic Muslim scholar, author, and activist. He has written several books on topics such as self-help, Islamic spirituality, and personal development. “Don’t Be Sad” is one of his most well-known works.
BOOK SUMMARY:
The author of ‘Dont Be Sad’ illustrates through the Quran and the Sunnah how every modern spiritual ailment can find remedy in Allah’s Book or in the life of the beloved Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him). It is an inspiring collection of historically-based anecdotes of prophets, scholars, and other people of accomplishment and their victory over life’s turmoil and tests. This book attempts to offer strength to people today to aid them in their struggle to maintain emotional and spiritual equilibrium in a demanding world during trying times.
The book is divided into short, easy-to-read chapters that provide practical advice and guidance on how to deal with sadness and anxiety. Al-Qarni draws upon Islamic teachings and stories from the lives of the Prophet Muhammad and his companions to provide readers with a perspective on how to cope with the challenges of life. He emphasizes the importance of developing a positive mindset, being grateful for what one has, and relying on Allah in times of difficulty.
KEY TAKEAWAYS:
One of the main takeaways from the book is the importance of developing a positive mindset. Al-Qarni encourages readers to focus on the good in their lives and to practice gratitude. He also emphasizes the importance of relying on Allah and seeking His help in times of difficulty.
Another key takeaway is the importance of recognizing that sadness and difficulty are a part of life and that one can learn and grow from them.
Our tragedy is that we are incapable of dealing with the present. Neglecting our beautiful castles, we wail over dilapidated buildings. Everything on earth marches forward, preparing for a new season—and so should you.
Dr Aidh Al Qarni
PERSONAL REFLECTIONS & CONCLUSION:
I think this book speaks to you depending on the phase of life you are in. I first came across this book during my early 20’s and it really helped me to read about the verses from the Holy Qur’an, quotes from other scholars and historical texts during that difficult phase of my life. It was a soothing balm for me then. There are many themes which are repeated over and over again. The original title of the book ‘La Tahzn’ comes from the Ayah 9: 40 from the Holy Quran, where Prophet Muhammad PBUH said to his companion (AbuBakr R) – ؓ لَا تَحْزَنْ إِنَّ اللَّـهَ مَعَنَا (` la tahzan innallaha ma` ana’: Do not grieve. Allah is with us) – when his companion got worried about their safety while they were hiding Thawr Cave.
“Don’t Be Sad” is a timeless book that provides spiritual and practical guidance for people struggling with sadness and difficulties in life. The book is easy to read and suitable for readers of all ages and backgrounds. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for guidance and inspiration on their spiritual journey.
