How Chores Affect Creativity – Week 9, 2021- Project 365

Week 9 of 2021 Alhamdulilah! Sharing a picture daily from our small world as part of Project 365

I read about the Rubber-Band method of parenting on @thesmallprintofbeingamum page about tips to reduce anger. So I had to try it out! Ever since the pandemic and this whole stay at home started, I have raised my voice more than I usually do!

I tried it so as not to lose my temper with my 5-year-old and she tried it out so as not to lose it with her younger sis.

It has become a game between us both haha 😀

(The stickers on my hand are a ‘gift’ from her!😁)

The thing with having two young kids is that our house is never silent except when they are asleep or watching TV. I have a habit of checking up on them when it gets too quiet.

During one of the rare quiet times, I went to check up on my younger one and I found her like this – cosy under a blanket with her doll, books and toys. I really wanted to join her but my house chores were staring back at me! (..and I kind of felt guilty to disrupt her cosy-me time!)

Third month of the year already. And almost one year lockdown anniversary! 😀

..and yay, Bday month too!! (Though I dont even celebrate my bday haha!)

How Chores Affect Creativity

‘From white velvet clouds comes sleek rain, strong enough to reach the skin in moments. And though they give, they remain puffed all the same, as if the pride of their fullness is as wide as the sky’

Angela Abraham

I have been thinking – The amount of creative talent of women that got rusted due to the nature of chores they have to daily. Day in. Day out. Month after month. Year after year.

How monotony of duties and sacrifices sometimes make us forget of the hobbies we used to enjoy, of the times we laughed and of the person we used to be.

However supportive our spouses and children are, there is a design of the world that puts a slightly bigger mental/physical load on the female of the house. The mental load that ends up absorbing the artistic hue of our souls.

I do not come with a solution to this conundrum, only thoughts of my wandering mind of how the success of any women in any field whether it be in arts or sciences or literature often have behind it hours of unpaid work and chores which wasn’t accounted for, which was expected of her, which she was judged about and due to which she had to put in twice the effort of her male counterparts.

The pandemic added salt to this wound.

Proof that dysmenorrhea takes a major chunk of my day and life!

5 year old took a photo of a rocket they made together to show me since I couldn’t walk to the living room – Under the blanket, seething with pain!

As I become increasingly interested in the effect of the food we eat on our life, I am trying to read more books on this theme.

I realise now…

We are what we eat.

Well, yet another haircut day by yours truly!😁 ( You would have thought I learnt from last week’s fiasco!)

After I was done, she made me take a picture, looked and said, “Mama, good job!” 😄🤣 ( I would have loved to refine the edges a little more, but she got restless by then!)

What is one thing that this pandemic has made you do, which you never expected to do?

It was a lazy weekend with Biriyani and a trip to the Corniche to enjoy the windy weather.

Sadness and grief are always a muse for poets and artists, since the beginning of time.

Good times most often brings a writer’s block.

….but, why?

Same goes with duas (prayers).

Our duas are most fervent and intense when we are in the deepest of dungeons.

The intensity of dua reduces a little bit when we have crossed that mountain of despair.

…but, why?

  2. Most of the mental load generally falls to me anyway and the pandemic has definitely added to that. I’ve not heard of the rubber band method before – will have to check it out. Love the photo of your little one getting cosy under a blanket and I’m impressed by your hair-cutting skills. I haven’t dared try cutting Sophie’s but I have had to cut Thomas’s hair and my husband’s hair a couple of times. #project365

  8. I hadn’t heard of the rubber band method before, but now I think its a great idea and I should try it! My two have driven me to distraction lately, so its worth trying. Yes always so many chores, it never ends! I feel like Cinderella at times.

  9. I’m in total agreement with you on the unfairness of the load of chores performed by women, and their creativity being suppressed by the mundane tasks. I haven’t heard of the rubber band method, but it sounds interesting. You did a good job with the hair cut, your daughter was right.
