N for Nadir

This post is part of the A to Z Challenge. My theme for the month is A to Z of words in English with an Arabic origin.

Nādir (نادر – meaning “rare”, “unique”) is a common name for boys amongst Muslims. Hence, I was quite surprised when I found out there is an English word ‘Nadir’ which holds a completely different meaning – lowest point, all-time low, rock bottom.

  1. One of the characters in my novel is named Nadira. She was one of Solomon’s thousand wives, and he loved her most. What he didn’t know was that she was a half angel. I chose the name for that very reason. 🙂 Great post !
